Judge James H. Ferguson, a prominent lawyer and politician, mysteriously left Virginia in the 1850s for ten years. On his return in 1864, he takes up his life as though he had never left. This biography investigates his unexplained absence and details his service in the Virginia and West Virginia Legislatures, his role in the Civil War and his friendship with people such as Senator Johnson Newlon Camden and railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington. Included are Fergusons love letters to his third wife, Lizzie, which describes first hand the work and travel of a lawyer in West Virginia in the 1880s.
